Workshop Supply List
FOR PLEIN AIR WORKSHOPS:
PALETTE AND EASEL SETUP SUITABLE FOR PLEIN AIR
UMBRELLA AND/OR HAT
FOR ALL WORKSHOPS:
CANVAS - 3-6 good quality oil or lead primed linen canvas, or boards. 9 x 12, 1 x 14 or any small to medium size you are comfortable with. This is VERY IMPORTANT as you will not be able to apply washes and “lift” paint on cotton or acrylic canvas.
MEDIUM – Gamsol to clean brushes. I change mediums occasionally –I use cold pressed linseed oil right now, but also traditional Meyer’s medium (5 part real distilled turpentine, not Gamsol, 1 part damar varnish, 1 part stand oil).
PAPER TOWELS - VIVA!!
GOOD MEDIUM SIZE PAINTING KNIFE
PALETTE – a glass palette, or piece of glass with duct tape on the edges is very easy to keep clean, which is so important. Paper palettes are very difficult to keep your paint clean .
PAINT-
Titanium White (any good brand, I use LeFranc)
Rembrandt – viridian, ultramarine deep, transparent oxide red, transparent oxide brown, cad.orange, cad yellow deep.
Optional - cobalt blue light, venetian red
Winsor Newton – terra rosa, alizarin permanent, cad. red, cad yellow pale, yellow ochre pale, magenta. Optional—permanent rose
BRUSHES – I use only Rosemary brushes , found at Rosemarybrushes.com. They come from England but ship usually in 1 ½ weeks or sooner, and shipping is inexpensive.
Ivory Long flat #10, and a small and medium size
Ivory Filbert, various small to medium
Shiraz round # 2/0 is a good inexpensive brush that makes a fine point
Mongoose series 274 #4, 5 ,6
Series 272 #6
Series 278 #6
Series 279 # 8
These are some of the brushes I use, - if you have your own good brushes please don’t feel you have to buy anything new. However, once you’ve tried some of these, you will love them!
